Mazda began life as the Toyo Cork Kogyo Co Ltd in 1920 before renaming itself Toyo Kogyo Co Ltd in 1927. Initially as a manufacturer of machine tools the company began vehicle production in 1931 with the introduction of the Mazda-Go. Although every vehicle sold bore the name Mazda it was not until 1984 that the company officially adopted the name.

In 1979 Mazda entered a partnership with Ford initially with a Ford taking a 7% stake which rose to 33.3% by 1996. More recently however Ford has lowered its stake in Mazda with its current holding standing at 3%.

Over the years the partnership has seen Mazda and Ford share both production and development on numerous models and whilst this has changed in recent years the companies still remain strategic partners.
