Originally the Land Rover name was used on one specific vehicle called "The Land Rover" launched in 1948. Over the years the range has grown and now along with its Range Rover siblings offers six strong model ranges.

Although the Land Rover dates back to the 1940's Land Rover as a company in its own right has only existed since 1978 when the company was created to avoid the ongoing and much publicised troubles of British Leyland although the company was still under the British Leyland umbrella.

The company remained as part of what became Rover Group until 1988 when ownership passed to British Aerospace.

In 1994 BMW acquired Rover Group but this was broken up and sold in 2000 with Ford buying Land Rover as part of its Premier Automotive Group. June 2008 saw Land Rover sold again this time to Tata Motors.
